FTIR

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is used to identify organic (carbon based) and occasionally inorganic materials.

Infrared light of varying wavelengths is shone onto the sample of interest and absorption bands determined. Absorption bands are characteristic of intra-molecular phenomena and are highly specific for each material.

The identification of these bands allow computerised data searches to be performed against standard reference libraries.
